A young man will be spending the remainder of the year in jail as he awaits his sentence for the crime of stealing from his aunt’s boutique.
Orlando Rickett, 23, pleaded guilty to a charge of break and enter and larceny after it was read to him by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in Georgetown yesterday.
Rickett admitted that on December 20th, 2019, at South Ruimveldt, he broke and entered the boutique of Aasha Gray and stole a quantity of brand name clothing and cash, amounting to $415,000 in total value, which was the property of Gray.
The police prosecutor told the court that Gray, who had earlier secured her store, returned to find the grill missing and some of her articles gone. The court heard that CCTV cameras at one of the entrances and around the perimeter all clearly showed Rickett entering the boutique and then leaving with a bulky bag. As a result, Gray made a report to police and Rickett was arrested. The stolen articles were found in his home.
Rickett, who asked the magistrate and was granted permission to address the court, said that he only took two hats, two bags, a jacket and three jerseys. He also said that his family usually gives him clothes from the boutique but he had only wanted the jacket. However, he admitted to taking the clothes, although he said that he did not take any money. “I don’t know anything about no money,” he told the magistrate.
Gray, who was also present, told the court that it was not the first time her nephew had stolen from her. “The first time I let him off but he needs to learn that the path he wants to go down could lead to very bad things,” she said. It was also revealed to the court that the man sometimes “smokes” and as a result Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus sent Rickett and his aunt to speak to a probation officer and afterwards adjourned the matter until January 20th, 2020, for his sentencing.
