National player Shemar Britton and Yeudistir Persaud combined their efforts to capture the inaugural ‘Seniors partner with Juniors’ Table Tennis Team tournament Sunday evening at the Malteenoes Sports Club.
Britton and Persaud played unbeaten throughout the two-day tournament which was organised by Britton and Joel Alleyne. The duo defeated Alleyne and Colin Wong 3-1 in the final.
The doubles contest went Britton and Persaud’s way 3-0 before Alleyne levelled the contest by defeating Persaud 3-1. Britton nonetheless, closed out the match by downing Wong 3-0 and Alleyne 3-1.
Earlier, Alleyne and Wong defeated Isiah Layne and Warren Hackshaw 3-0 in the semis while Britton and Persaud got past Thuraia Thomas and Christopher Franklin.
The doubles match was picked up by Britton and Persaud who won 11-8, 11-7, 13-11. The overall score line moved to 2-0 when Britton accounted for Thomas 11-5, 11-7, 11-6. Franklin pulled a game back for his side by getting past Persaud 11-9, 11-6, 11-4.
Franklin’s win set up the contest between himself and Britton, Guyana’s top two players. However, the finals berth was secured by Britton who came from a set down to defeat Franklin 9-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8.
