A new champion will be crowned in the Guyana Football Federation [GFF] Super 16 Championship after Santos whipped holders Den Amstel 3-0 in the quarterfinals Thursday at the Georgetown Football Club [GFC] ground, Bourda.
Orin Yarde, Stephon Reynolds and Kester Jacobs were on target in the 43rd, 47th and 90th+1 minute respectively. Santos will now meet Fruta Conquerors tomorrow at the same venue in the semi-final. The Guyana Defence Force [GDF] edged Buxton United 2-1 to earn their place in the final four.
Benjamin Opara and Sherwin Caesar scored in the 65th and 102nd minute respectively for the army. For Buxton United, Omari Glasgow found the back of the net in the 61st minute.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force [GPF] defeated Western Tigers 2-1 in extra time after the initial match was abandoned following a power failure at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary on Wednesday evening.
The power failure occurred in the second half of extra with less than 11 minutes remaining in the encounter. At the time of the stoppage, the score was locked at 1-1. Daniel Wilson handed the lawmen the lead in the 50th minute while Andrew Murray Jr., equalised in the 89th minute.
The rescheduled encounter, which continued with only 10 minutes remaining on the clock, was decided by a Trayon Bobb strike in the 111th minute. GPF will now take aim at GDF in the second semi-final encounter.
The team emerging the winner on January 1st, 2020 will be rewarded with two million dollars and the championship trophy, with the losing finalist pocketing one million. The third and fourth place finishers will receive $500, 000 and $250,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
