Winners Connection and Topp XX battled their way into the semi-final round of the Upper Demerara Football Association [UDFA] year-end competition Thursday at the Mackenzie Sports Club [MSC] ground, Linden.
Winners Connection battled past Capital FC 4-2. Two first-half goals placed Winners Connection in firm control of the clash. Michael Sheckles blasted his effort into the left corner in the 10th minute to break the deadlock.
Marley Davidson then slammed his effort into the right side from inside the box to double their advantage in the 34th minute. Upon the resumption, the score ballooned once more in the 47th minute, as Davidson completed his double with a clinical finish past the custodian from inside the 18-yard area.
However, Capital FC ignited a comeback effort in the form of Tony Adams, scorer of two goals in the space of seven minutes.
The first for the veteran forward occurred in the 55th minute, slotting past the advancing custodian. The deficit was further reduced as Adams sealed his brace in the 62nd minute with a right-foot effort. Nonetheless, any attempt of a comeback was extinguished four minutes later as Davidson completed his hat-trick, rifling his powerful shot into the back of the net.
Meanwhile, Topp XX downed Amelia’s Ward Panthers 3-0. The contest was decided in the extra time realm, as both teams struggled to find the back of the net during the initial 90 minute regulation time interval.
Jamal Bentick eventually broke the deadlock, slotting into the far corner in the 94th minute. His second came 10 minutes later, lashing his effort from inside the box into the roof of the net. Ryan Noel then converted from the penalty spot in the 111th to seal the outcome.
The two teams will now face off in the semi-final round tomorrow [Sunday] at the same venue. The other semi-final will pit Coomacka against Botofago.
