An ex-soldier was yesterday charged with the manslaughter of Rose Hall vendor, Stephen Lewis when he appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
Terrence Roopnarine, also known as `Terry’, 27, of David Street, Rose Hall Town, was read the charge that on Tuesday, December 24 he unlawfully killed Lewis called `Shabba’. He appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore.
Police Prosecutor, Matheson, did not object to bail and Magistrate Moore placed an unrepresented Roopnarine on $200,000 bail. He was ordered to lodge his travel documents and report to the Rose Hall Police Outpost every Tuesday and Friday.
The matter was then assigned to the Albion Magistrate’s Court for February 18 next year.
Lewis of Lot 29 Portuguese Quarter, Corentyne, operated a vegetable and fruit stall at the Port Mourant and Rose Hall Town markets.
Lewis’s grandmother, Yonette Davis, had stated, that she was at home when her son informed her that Lewis had been stabbed. Lewis was operating his stall on the Rose Hall Town Public Road for the annual Christmas Eve lime on the night he was murdered. A chic-chic board vendor was operating next to him and once business slowed up Lewis decided to partake in the game, this newspaper was told.
According to the police, the men who were known to each other were playing a game of chic-chic when an argument ensued which led to a confrontation between the two and then a physical altercation.
Stabroek News was told that Lewis after arguing with the suspect turned to go back to his stall and it was then that the accused allegedly dealt him a stab to the back of his head.
