Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) yesterday blamed a circuit breaker fault at the Garden of Eden Power Plant for the shutdown of the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) that left its customers without power on Thursday.
In a press release, GPL said that at approximately 1.35 pm on Thursday, the DBIS experienced a shutdown due to a fault on a circuit breaker at the Garden of Eden Power Plant, which caused a “lock out” of the busbar facilitating transfer of power from four generators. The sudden loss of 18 megawatts of generator capacity resulted in the shutdown, it added.
According to GPL, remedial efforts began immediately and the first area was repowered at 1.56 pm. It added that at approximately 3 pm, all areas were repowered following replacement of the defective breaker.
Additionally, GPL noted that prior to the DBIS shutdown, sections of the Georgetown, East Coast and East Bank of Demerara experienced periods of service interruptions due to localised area faults caused by the inclement weather. It apologised for the inconvenience caused.
