The driver who struck a pensioner along the Nigg Public Road, Corentyne on Tuesday morning killing her has since been released on station bail.
According to information gathered, the driver, 29, a Chinese national and businessman of Lot 56 Robb Street, Lacytown, Georgetown was placed on $100,000 station bail.
A police source yesterday explained that after the 72 hours for detention elapsed police placed the man on station bail since no extension for the period in custody was sought.
The source said that a post-mortem examination is expected to be done on the pensioner’s body today and “it is likely” that charges will be laid sometime next week.
Parvidi Ramcharan also known as `Marina’, 81, a pensioner, formerly of Albion Front, Corentyne, had just exited the Nigg Post Office and proceeded to walk a short distance to cross the Nigg Public Road on a nearby pedestrian crossing, when she was struck by motor car, PPP 1008.
Based on CCTV footage seen by this newspaper, Ramcharan after exiting the post office began walking towards the pedestrian crossing. Upon arriving at the crossing she looked both sides seemingly to check whether there was any oncoming traffic and then began walking across.
However, the motor car which was travelling at a fast rate struck her directly at the centre of the crossing and pitched her some distance away.
Several persons then rushed to her assistance and transported her to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
She reportedly sustained major head injuries and other injuries about her body.
