A Corentyne pastor is now nursing injuries after he was beaten by three bandits who invaded his home during the wee hours of Thursday morning.

Pastor Kalyan Etwaru, also known as ‘Rohan,’ of Lot 12 B Letter Kenny, Corentyne, who is also a secondary school teacher, was on Thursday morning rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital for injuries sustained during the attack. He has since received medical attention and was told to rest due to the injuries to his back. Etwaru explained that on Thursday morning he heard a glass break and when he checked he saw two masked men, one armed with a gun and another with a cutlass, in the lower flat of his house. “They ask me for the keys to the church… they wanted the money box,” he said.

According to the pastor, the church, located next door to his home, has a donation box, which is used to collect funds for church projects. “I told them I don’t have the keys. They hit me and I fell on the ground and they start kicking me and they ask me to come outside to call on my neighbor and I told them my neighbour is not at home and they hit me over and over,” he said.

The third bandit was outside during the entire robbery, Etwaru noted.

He said one of the perpetrators attempted to hit him to his head with the cutlass, forcing him to block the blow with his hands.

The men then proceeded to ransack the entire house, “Them point the gun at me and said they will shoot me if I don’t give them everything I have.” He said he had cash in his possession that was to be sent for missionaries in the interior along with his personal cash, “They took everything and they exited the back,” he said.

In total the men escaped with $250,000.

Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation but no arrest had been made up to yesterday afternoon.
