A newspaper vendor was killed last night after two men, both armed, invaded his Essequibo Coast home in an attempted robbery.
Chunilall Manilall, 48, of Queenstown, Essequibo Coast, who was a newspaper vendor at Charity and Anna Regina, was shot and killed in his home after he attempted to fend off the two men.
The attack occurred just around 8.20 pm, when men, one armed with a cutlass and another with a gun, entered Manilall’s home.
According to the man’s daughter, Kaysheena Manilall, she, her father, mother and sister were all outside of the home as they had a barbecue with neighbours.
Kaysheena told Stabroek News that her mother and sister went inside the house to collect glasses and a cooler. “By time they go to lock back the door, the two men come up,” she said. She noted that subsequently they pushed her sister, which led her to scream. “After we hear the hollering, we run in, my father and me run in,” she added. The woman said that after they ran into the house, they saw the two men, who demanded valuables.
She noted that her father picked up a mop stick in an attempt to fend off the bandits and as he was about to hit one of them, the one with the gun shot him four times.
According to Kaysheena, they were unable to see the faces of the men as they were both wearing helmets, which covered the top of their faces, along with something covering their mouths.
After the men shot Manilall, his family members began to scream, which led the bandits to jump the fence and make their escape.
Kaysheeena said that there were never attempts to rob the family’s home before and she is not aware if anyone had any problems with her father.
The police are currently investigating the murder.
