A senior police officer in Region Six has been identified as the person who gave instructions to release the driver who struck a pensioner on the pedestrian crossing along the Nigg Public Road on station bail before the 72 hours within which he could be held without charge had elapsed.
While a source had claimed that the driver, who is a 29-year-old Chinese national of Lot 56 Robb Street, Lacytown, Georgetown, was released on $100,000 station bail after the 72-hour detention period had elapsed, an officer close to the matter has since revealed that the man was released before the expiry of the detention period after instructions came directly from the senior officer. Others supported the source’s account.
According to the source, this is not the first time the senior officer has intervened in a matter.
Parvidi Ramcharan, also known as ‘Marina’, 81, a pensioner, formerly of Albion Front, Corentyne, had just exited the Nigg Post Office around 10 am on Tuesday when she was struck by a car, PPP 1008, at the centre of the pedestrian crossing on the main road.
A post-mortem examination carried out on the body of Ramcharan revealed that she died from shock and haemorrhaging due to injuries about her body.
Relatives yesterday said that they are now worried whether justice would be served after the interference by the senior officer.
According to a source, it is unclear whether a file has yet been prepared to be sent for advice in the matter so as to file charges against the driver.
