2020 is anticipated to be a busy year for chess. There will be three national championships — the seniors, the juniors and the women’s.

Before the national championship for the seniors is held,  a national qualifier is to be played. Nine players, in addition to the 2019 national chess champion, will compete for the title of 2020 Chess Champion of Guyana.

It is believed also that the international Carifta Chess Tournament will be held in Guyana. This year, too, the Chess Olympiad will be contested in Russia. Guyana will send two teams — a men’s and a women’s.

The national qualifier to determine the nine contestants who will participate in the final event promises to be a brutal affair. The games will be scintillating, and packed with theory. The favourites to qualify for the national championship are Meusa, Greenidge, Corlette, Nathoo, Mars, Kriskal Persaud, Chino Chung, Roberto Neto, Shiv Nandalall and perhaps Frankie Farley.

Among the juniors the battles for supremacy would be fought mainly by Ethan Lee, Rajiv Lee and Jaden Taylor.
