A Matthews Ridge, North West District man was granted bail yesterday after he was charged with wounding a shopkeeper, who reportedly threw a bottle at him after refusing to repay the money he owed.
Romel David initially pleaded guilty “with explanation” to the charge after it was read by Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Three.
The charge stated that on November 6th, 2016, at Five Miles, Arakaka, North West District, David unlawfully and maliciously wounded Marcel Carvallo with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm.
The defendant told the court that Carvallo borrowed $150,000 from him and on the date mentioned, he went to him and asked for the money. His request, he said, was met with anger and Carvallo threw a glass bottle at him. The man said that he then armed himself with a cutlass to defend himself from the angry shopkeeper.
In light of his explanation, the magistrate entered a not guilty plea for David and granted him bail in the sum of $75,000. She told him not to return to the shopkeeper’s home and transferred the matter to the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court, where the matter will be called on February 3rd.
