Trial of man accused of killing murder suspect underway

Trevor Amsterdam, the man accused of killing murder suspect Jermaine Simon at Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara (EBD) in November 2015, pleaded not guilty to the crime as a High Court trial in the matter began on Tuesday.

The charge against Amsterdam alleges that on November 10, 2015 at Bagotstown, he murdered Simon.

The matter was called on Tuesday before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court, and following Amsterdam’s not guilty plea, a jury was empaneled and a trial commenced in the matter.

The trial continued yesterday with witnesses including the deceased’s uncle being called to the witness box by state representatives Tuana Hardy, Nafeeza Baig and Tiffany Lyken. The witnesses were cross-examined by Amsterdam’s attorney Ravindra Mohabir.

According to previous reports, at the time of his death, Simon was wanted by the police for questioning in connection with the murder of Ryan Sooklall at Providence, EBD. Police had said that Simon was allegedly shot in the head by the accused following a dispute. The man had reportedly left his home in Agricola to check on his grandmother when the shooting occurred.

He died the following day while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital. The trial is expected to continue today.
