The senior Guyana Police Force Officer accused of sexually assaulting a female has been relieved of his duties and an administrative decision “will be made shortly”, according to Commissioner of Police Leslie James.
“He was stood down from his actual duties and an administrative decision will be made shortly” James told reporters yesterday when asked for an update on the matter on the sidelines of the Guyana Defence Force’s Annual Officers’ Conference at State House.
Stabroek News understands that a female journalist made the allegation against the officer and that the alleged incident occurred sometime late last year.
Last week the force issued a terse statement which stated: “The Guyana Police Force is currently investigating a report of an alleged sexual assault, allegedly committed by a Senior Police officer….”
According to James, investigators have since obtained a statement from the alleged victim and she was medically examined but the medical has not yet been received by the force.
There are reports that the woman told other senior officers about the alleged assault before she made an official report but they took no action.
Asked about this, James said: “It is not fair to say that they did nothing, it is the victim, we are not officious, we respond based on reports.”
“Indeed the alleged victim did (speak) to a number of officers prior to her making an actual report, but she apparently was undecided, that much I would say at this point and time,” the Commissioner said.
