A man who says he uses narcotics to alleviate stress was yesterday remanded to prison while the Acting Chief Magistrate awaits a probation report for sentencing.
Joseph George, 47, was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday when he pleaded guilty to two charges.
It is alleged that on January 17th, at School Street, Seven Mile, Mahdia, he had in his possession 4.3 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. It was also alleged that on the same date and at the same location, he had in his possession, 2 grammes of cannabis, for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the police prosecutor, Tracy-May Gittens, police in Mahdia were acting on information when they approached the man and conducted a search on him. As a result, they found the cocaine in a bottle in his pants crotch and the suspected marijuana was found in the right-side pocket of his pants.
The father of five told the court that he uses the substance to alleviate stress he gets from working in the interior. He also said that he does not cause any trouble but that he gets agitated when he doesn’t get the substance because he has been using it for years. He also told the court that he has been convicted twice before. Once for assault and another time for robbery.
After his confession, the Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus remanded him to prison until tomorrow when his probation report will be presented to the court and a sentencing will follow.
