Exciting up and coming junior player Shaquon Favourite distinguished himself on Sunday by securing the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, guiding Old Fort to the U – 16 title of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), QPCC indoor challenge at the National Gymnasium.
Old Fort defeated QPCC 1-0 in a penalty shootout in the final. Favourite converted the penalty strike. Earlier, he had an outstanding run during the round-robin leg. He combined with his club mate Daniel Woolford, who on the award for the most goals of the tournament, to ensure their side’s success.
Meanwhile, QPCC defeated GCC 3-0 in the U – 13 final to cop their second title at the end of their tour following their triumph on Saturday in the final of the U– 13 outdoor challenge at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground.
Nicholas Siu Butts (QPCC) and Siem Zanvliet (QPCC) were the top goal scorers and MVP in the U – 13 indoor category respectively.
The visit by the Trinidad juniors – QPCC – was their first to Guyana. It was dubbed a historic visit and it is likely to continue in the coming years.
QPCC’s Junior Hockey Academy was founded by Rob Wyatt about five years ago, with Darren Cowie (former National Captain) as the Head Coach of the programme. Following its founding, the club’s juniors have gone on to win a number of domestic national club titles and continue to be one of Trinidad’s main incubator to develop their talents.
