The National Track and Field Centre is ‘fit and proper’ to host the 50th edition of the CARIFTA Games next year.
The Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) has been given the green light to stage the event for the first time in its history following a visit by the top brass of the North America, Central America, and Caribbean (NACAC) yesterday.
Along with members of the AAG, President of NACAC, Mike Sands and his General Secretary, Keith Joseph traveled to the Region 3 venue for inspection.
Sands and Joseph’s main purpose of coming to Guyana was to gauge the venue’s progress and capability of hosting a Track & Field meet of the magnitude of CARIFTA.
Traditionally, the Regional Games caters for 800 athletes & technical delegates along with almost 2000 travelling fans.
According to Manager of the National Track and Field Centre, Trevor Williams, the facility currently has a capacity of approximately 3000 but with the proposed installation of two more stands, the capability will increase to 5000.
Joseph and Sands agreed that although there is some work to be done at the venue, it has a lot of space and the potential of the facility is immense, not only for the Easter weekend Games in 2021 but for future events.
The NACAC officials highlighted during the visit that technical help will be provided if the AAG desires and as much as 20 local officials are scheduled to benefit from general and specialised training in the months ahead
The NACAC duo along with members of the AAG are schedule to host a press conference today at the Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Sport; Dr. George Norton’s office.
