Following his stints at two table tennis camps in Europe, national junior player Miguel Wong had a taste of top-flight competition in the recently held 2020 ITTF World Tour Platinum German open, in Magdeburg, Germany but was unsuccessful in advancing past the opening round.
Wong, who represented Guyana at the event, was knocked out by Japan’s Shunsuke Toganmi 11-3, 11-4, 11-9, 11-9 in the preliminary round of the men’s single category.
The 19-year-old Guyanese who recalled having his moments in the match, relayed to Stabroek Sport that he is not at all perturbed by the end result of his participation in the tournament, noting that it is all part of his growth process.
“I’m really grateful to have played the German open; it’s my first pro tour platinum event and I really got to see where my level was and I now know exactly what I need to work on,” the young man explained. He noted that the event included the top 10 players and included as much as the top 200 players in the world.
For this reason, he said that his participation will aid to advance his world rankings. He will now turn his attention to the Portugal open which gets underway shortly. Guyana’s wonder girl Chelsea Edghill will also trade serves with her female counterparts in the Lisbon event.
The young man said he is highly appreciative of the contributions from sponsors Brian Sukhail of Power Producers and Distributors, Beacon Café, Kings Jewellery, Titans Table Tennis Club, Ready Mix Cement and the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) for funding his trip.
