Minister of Sport Dr George Norton paid a courtesy call to members of the Golden Jaguars Senior team and observed one of their training sessions ahead of the pivotal 2021 Gold Cup Qualifier against Barbados, slated for next month.
Speaking to media operatives yesterday at the National Training Centre, Providence, Norton said that the government has always supported the initiatives and projects of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF). He added that support will continue to be afforded due to their recent historic accomplishments.
The minister said that the government has always contributed financially to the Golden Jaguars and a similar and improved posture will continue for the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile, GFF President Wayne Forde stated that he is confident of the Golden Jaguars prevailing over Barbados in the first round of the Gold Cup Qualifiers.
“I am confident of a positive result and of breaking the streak of not winning in 18 years against Barbados. I am confident that we will [win] 2-1 in Barbados and then 3-1 in the return leg,” he said.
According to Forde, the national team preparation has adopted a professional mindset with several coaches who are certified and qualified in specific areas.
Guyana will face-off with Barbados on March 18th in Bridgetown before contesting the return fixture on March 22nd at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
