National volleyball spikers Philana Simpson and Andy Rohoman have been identified to lead the national under – 21 female and male teams respectively in the upcoming Inter-Guianas under – 21 volleyball tournament in Cayenne later this month.
Simpson and Rohoman were identified at the weekend as the selection committee of the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) named the squads that will journey to French Guiana on February 25 for a crack at the titles from February 27-29..
The squads were decided following a number of trial simulations at the National Gymnasium where the contingents continue to fortify their preparation.
Meanwhile, both leaders in brief interviews with Stabroek Sport indicated that the goal is to bring home the Cup. Rohoman, who in 2019 led the side to silver, said that he is confident of exacting revenge over French Guiana who defeated the Guyanese 3-2 in the final.
Rohoman was adjudged the best attacker in the 2019 edition of the tournament.
Simpson, on the other hand, will for the first time wear the national captain’s armband. However, she noted that her girls are up for the challenge and are primed to better their last-place finish in 2019.
The female unit will be without the multitalented Sherry-Ann Fraser who is currently with the West Indies senior women’s cricket team on international duties.
