Erskine beats sister to win 10-years-and-under title

As the week-long celebration for the fifth anniversary of the Rebel Tennis Club, Christin Richmond, Naomi Erskine, Jonathan Boyan and Quivion Proctor emerged champions in their respective divisions of their inaugural junior tournament.

At the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) Diamond Court, in the Red Ball division for girls 10 years and under, Erskine defeated her sister, Kimora 10-5 to secure the title.

In the earlier stages of the division, the champion had defeated her sister 10-4 while Zahra Ahmad beat Nandica Arjune 10-4, Mariam Browne defeated Alysa Ali 15-13.

Venus Lawson, Ali and the Erskine sisters advanced to the semi-finals. Lawson suffered her first loss to Kimora Erskine 10-8 while Ali went down to Naomi Erskine 10-4 to book the family final.

Naomi Erskine also made it to the final of the Orange ball division for girls 12 years and under but was beaten by Richmond 10-4. Richmond was undefeated in group `A’, beating Lawson and Adara Garraway 10-2 and 10-3 respectively while Naomi Erskine handed her sister a 10-3 defeat before beating Shechaela Duncan 10-4 to advance.

In the semis, Richmond defeated Lawson and Naomi again got the better of her sister. Both players won by 10-6 margins.

Meanwhile, over in the boy’s Orange ball category, five players competed in the round robin format with Boyan securing the title via most wins. Jonathan Jordan was second despite both ending with two wins due to the points tally.

Jordan also settled for second in the Red Ball boys’ final after losing to Proctor 11-9.  Jordan had the advantage at 9-6 but Proctor won five consecutive points to come from behind and complete an undefeated run.

Julian Ramanan and Jordan were also undefeated heading into the semis. Jordan defeated Rafa Casada 10-2 and Proctor booked his final spot with a 10-7 win over Ramanan.

As part of the celebration, the club has also embarked on a feeding the homeless programme and will be distributing food hampers to selected single parents.
