A man was granted bail on Friday after he denied assaulting a police constable, while three other charges against him were dismissed after his accuser declined to pursue them.
Denzel Benjamin, 20, was charged with unlawfully assaulting Police Constable Narine on February 11th at the Alberttown Police Station, while being held in custody for another offence.
Benjamin pleaded not guilty to the charge as well as the three other charges when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in a Georgetown court.
Apart from the assault, it was alleged that on February 6th, at Croal Street, Georgetown, Benjamin maliciously damaged a pair of spectacles, valued $45,000, which were the property of Seon Clark. It was also alleged that on the same day, he assaulted Clark and used threatening behaviour toward Clark. However, Clark did not want to proceed with the charges and as a result they were dismissed.
Benjamin was granted his release on $15,000 bail on the assault charge and he was told to return to court on February 21st.
Benjamin was also charged last December with unlawful wounding.
It is alleged that on November 17th, at Cornhill Street, Brickdam, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Delon Glasgow.
The matter was heard by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty and the court was told that Benjamin had just gotten out of a taxi when Glasgow attacked him with a piece of wood. He had said that he usually has a knife in his bag, which he used to defend himself. He said that they got into a fight and Glasgow sustained his wounds as a result. Benjamin was then released on $75,000 bail.
