After over one year on the run, the accused in the murder of Darren Edwards, who was fatally stabbed in December 2018, was remanded to prison yesterday after he was charged with the crime.
It is alleged that Gary Blackman, 47, found the deceased with his girlfriend, resulting in a physical altercation in which he armed himself with an icepick and inflicted the fatal wounds.
Blackman appeared before Chief magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One and was not required to plead to the indictable charge after it was read to him.
The charge states that on December 21st, 2018, at Hadfield Street, George-town, Blackman murdered Edwards, called ‘Overdose.’
According to Prosecutor S. Matthews, the two men were friends. He said that on the night the killing occurred, Blackman went to visit his girlfriend at Leopold Street and upon arriving there he discovered Edwards in bed with her. A fight between the two men ensued, resulting in Blackman arming himself with an icepick after which he allegedly dealt several stabs to Edwards.
Edwards managed to escape from the home and ran into the street but Blackman chased after him and caught up with him in the vicinity of Hadfield Street, where he continued stabbing him with the icepick. Blackman then escaped, while Edwards was picked up and carried to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.
On Tuesday, Blackman was apprehended by the police and was taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station, where he was told of the allegation and after advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) the current charge was instituted.
The prosecutor then informed the court that there is still one statement outstanding.
The matter was subsequently adjourned until February 20th, 2020.
