A 12-year-old grade seven student of the West Demerara Secondary School was left hospitalised with a fractured skull last Monday after being beaten and robbed.
Around 3.30 pm on Monday, the child was riding his bicycle home from school in his home village of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, when he was reportedly approached by a male, who was also on a bicycle. His assailant dealt him a blow to his head, which knocked him unconscious.
The child’s father, Amir Ally, told Stabroek News that he found out that his son was just about 12 houses away from home at the time of the attack. He said that after his son was knocked unconscious, his cellphone was stolen. As a result, family members were subsequently alerted and the child was taken to his home and later to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
Ally disclosed that his son was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where a scan was done and showed that he had a fractured skull and internal bleeding. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital. Ally stated that a report was made to the police on Monday afternoon following the incident and the police were in constant communication with him about the investigations.
There have been recent reports of multiple gangs in villages along the West Bank who ride around on bicycles and rob persons in the villages, including school children.
Ally told Stabroek News that his son is recovering and responding well to treatment and is no longer in a critical state. No suspects have been apprehended in relation to the incident.
