A thirty-four-year-old Cuban immigrant was killed minutes to seven this morning in what was believed to be an attempted robbery on Middle Street while on his way to work.
Dead is Ofredis Duarte Campos of 321 East Street, Georgetown. The man was said to have suffered a shot to the right side of his chest, another to his l eft wrist and a third under his chin.
Campos was on his way to work as per usual when he was approached by two men according to nearby residents. It was said that he had with him a haversack containing a work tee shirt, and support belt he wore at work to prevent back injuries. He had on his person, his phone also, all of which was recovered by his family at the hospital.
One resident said that the father of two refused to part with the haversack resulting in him being shot while another said that Campos was shot after the men realized he had nothing valuable in the bag. A CCTV camera was said to have captured the incident.
The man who is an employee of Rossignol Butchery on Church Street had been employed with the company for six years, four of which, while he lived in Suriname before moving two years ago to Guyana to work at the local branch here.
A post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
