Guyana’s female national table tennis team has served its way into the history books after they were selected by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to participate in the 2020 World Teams Table Tennis Championships scheduled for March 22-29 2020 in Buscan, South Korea.
The announcement was made by the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) which hailed the women’s selection as significant for the sport here.
“This is significant for Guyana’s table tennis brand since male and female players have represented Guyana at the singles edition of the world table tennis championships in 2003, 2005, and 2013,” a GTTA press release noted.
It added: “Guyana has never had a representative national team male or female represented at the world championships. This would signify the first time in the history of the sport that a Guyana national team would participate as a unit at the World Championships.” The GTTA noted that they were informed of Guyana’s qualification via an email from Dimosthenis Messinis, ITTF World Tour Manager, indicating that Guyana’s national female team was given the final slot for participation in the women’s team competition.
The GTTA posited that recent performances from Trenace Lowe, Chelsea Edghill, Natalie Cummings, Jody Ann Blake and Priscilla Greaves in international competitions such as the Commonwealth Games, the South American Games in Bolivia, silver medal finishes in the Caribbean championships and Pan American qualification, went a long way in securing the slot to South Korea. The championships will serve as preparation for the continental Olympic trials scheduled for April 14-19, 2020 in Rosario, Argentina and other key international engagements.
While the GTTA has not named the final squad for the March event, it noted that Edghill, Lowe, Natalie Cummings, Pricilla Greaves, and Blake among others are some of the names high on the list to represent Guyana. Only Cummings participated in the recent senior nationals.
