Cricketers from the West Berbice based Cricket Club Achievers will now benefit from a donation of cricket gear from Guyana’s most recent First Class player, Kevin Sinclair.
It was a simple but significant occasion for the 20-year-old yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club where the Inter-County Under-15 final was played between Berbice, a team he turned out for almost seven years ago and Demerara.
Sinclair, who plays for West Berbice in the Cricket Guy Inc Franchise League, decided to give back to the Bush Lot based unit after noticing that they were short on gear but overloaded with talent.
The right-handed batsman told this publication that he knows what it’s like to be without and has always garnered support from persons around him.
“You know cricket is an expensive game, especially coming from not so well off families and for me growing up I was fortunate to have the support of kind and willing people helping me along the way, now that I am in a bit of a better position, I saw it fit to give back and assist those coming through the ranks now so it is in a way continuing the cycle of helping others in need,” Sinclair said.
President of Achievers, David Black, who also manages Sinclair in the Franchise League, welcomed the contribution and thanked him for his much-needed support.
“First of all I must thank him for taking such a bold step because we know he started playing Franchise for Upper Corentyne and after there were some problems, I took him over into our franchise and he has been accepted by all the members of West Berbice,” Black stated.
He added that Sinclair’s contribution does not stop there, noting “once he is available he holds sessions on Saturdays with the players and they have been well motivated from what he has been doing so it is very good that could have done this.”
Black posited that since Sinclair’s under-15 days playing and learning under his grandfather, Carlton he has shown promise.
The Achievers’ leader reflected that when Sinclair was not selected ahead of the Regional Super50 for Guyana, he told him not to give up. Sinclair went on to play for the eventual title winners, West Indies Emerging Players where he finished as the most economical bowler.
Sinclair is part of the Guyana Jaguars First-Class squad, making his debut this season and has so far played three matches with a high score of 43 and four wickets bowling off-spin.
