Investigators are still working to determine who opened fire on Tuesday leaving Randy Bowen dead and his accomplice injured after they robbed a woman of her handbag in Campbellville.
This is according to Edgar Thomas, Commander of Region 4(A), who informed Stabroek News that as of Friday, the identity of the shooter remains unknown. “Who actually is the shooter? So far we are unable to say,” Thomas said.
He added that the investigation remains active.
Bowen, 22, of Duncan Street, Campbellville was shot dead during the incident which occurred around 3.30 pm on Tuesday. His accomplice, Shaquiel Mentore, a labourer of Back Circle, East Ruimveldt was shot in his legs. He was hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and is likely to be charged upon his discharge.
The two men robbed a woman of her handbag and attempted to escape. The woman raised an alarm and public-spirited persons chased after the bandits. During the chase, the bandits reportedly opened fire and a member of the public returned fire and Bowen was fatally wounded. Mentore was injured.
Thomas had previously told Stabroek News that the police re-visited the scene on Wednesday during which they found a firearm which is believed to be the one used by one of the suspects during the shooting.
Residents had recalled hearing gunshots “ringing out”.
Andrew Bowen, the dead man’s father, told reporters at the scene that he last saw his son, Bowen, around 3 pm on Tuesday.
“…He ask me for a thousand ($1,000). I give him and he left and went,” he had said.
About an hour after, he said he received a call informing him that his son had been shot.
