Mayor mulling restricting access to Sussex St while repairs underway

Georgetown Mayor, Ubraj Narine, on Tuesday suggested that barriers be placed on Sussex Street which is currently undergoing remedial works, to prevent heavy-duty vehicles from traversing the road.

This suggestion was made at the City Council’s statutory meeting as the mayor was reading through a report from the Council’s Engineer’s department. While perusing the report he noted that a number of road works were completed including in the West Ruimveldt areas, Agricola, and other areas and expressed the hope that works on Sussex Street would be completed before the week is over. The mayor said that they have received assistance from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MoPI) in getting those works done for which he is grateful.

He noted that following discussions with persons from the ministry, he believes that barriers should be placed to restrict access along Sussex Street. “We should put a bar over Sussex Street, to prevent heavy duty vehicles to traverse… the council would bear that expense,” he said, while adding that this should be done at both ends.

Councillor Heston Bostwick, who is responsible for the constituency which a section of the street runs through, applauded the suggestion made by the mayor as he added that barriers should be placed at three different sections of the road. With that the Mayor stated that before any decisions are made a site visit should be conducted.

In August 2019, the council took a decision to have Sussex Street closed to traffic until it was rehabilitated. At that time it was noted that businesses would not be affected by the closure of the roads. Council representatives noted that they sent letters to the Commis-sioner of Police and the Traffic Chief with officials from the MoPI also receiving letters. It was also reported last September that despite the decision of council to close the street to traffic, no action was taken and the road was not closed.
