President David Granger, yesterday morning, met former Prime Minister of Jamaica Bruce Golding and his team from the Organisation of American States (OAS) Observer Mission in Guyana.
The meeting was held at the Ministry of the Presidency.
A release from the Ministry said that Granger, during his briefing, said that the March 2, 2020 General and Regional Elections were orderly.
The President reminded that the Guyana Elections Commission is an independent and Constitutional body. He told the observer mission that like all of Guyana, he is awaiting the ruling of the court and ultimately, the declaration by the Elections Commission.
Granger added that it would be improper and unlawful for him to interfere in the work of the Commission.
“It would be unlawful. I have no role to play. The matter is before the Chief Justice and I will await the ruling of the Chief Justice,” Granger said.
The President, who is performing the functions of a caretaker, also condemned the levels of violence meted out to school children, villagers and the police as well as the destruction of property during unrest on Friday.
The OAS is among observer missions here that have said that the tabulation of votes in region Four is incomplete and should be resumed. This position has also been taken by the Commonwealth, the European Union observer mission, the Caricom team and the Carter Center.
