A mechanic who agreed to compensate a man he was charged with stabbing has been given an extension of the time granted for him to make the payment.
Feraz Narine, 36, of 243 Second Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara, failed to complete the payments to Teon Archer as part of a $300,000 compensation arrangement.
At Narine’s previous hearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, he had told the court that he would compensate Archer a total sum of $300,000 for the injuries caused. He proceeded to make a down payment of $100,000 on that date and promised to complete payment at his next hearing, which was held on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, however, Narine told Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan that the man he intended to borrow the remaining money from was not responding to his calls or messages, and so he requested to be allowed to make a payment of $20,000 and to pay the remainder at his next hearing.
The court agreed to his request.
According to the police, Narine on November 21, 2019, at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, wounded Archer with intent to commit murder. The accused and the virtual complainant were having a physical confrontation when Narine pulled out a knife and stabbed Archer. Archer was immediately rushed to the Diamond Hospital and was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a critical condition.
Narine was later arrested and charged. However, the charge was subsequently changed from attempted murder to unlawful and malicious wounding after Archer recovered successfully.
The matter was adjourned until March 25, 2020
