With gyms closing countrywide coupled with social distancing because of the pandemic COVID-19, this year’s Intermediate Bodybuilding Championships has been postponed indefinitely.
This is according to President of the Guyana Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, Keavon Bess.
Bess told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the federation has been unable to put logistics in place for the event which was scheduled for April 25 in Berbice, citing several factors including COVID-19 and the political climate.
The federation’s head further noted that with gym owners locking their doors, athletes will be unable to train optimally which will further dissuade them from competing.
“It’s all about the athletes, no athletes, no show” said Bess.
Bess said that the federation was still optimistic of hosting the flagship, National Seniors event.
“Medical experts are saying that COVID-19 can get worse before it gets better. So everything is in a tentative position.
“However, if we don’t get to do the Intermediate event, we are still hoping to do Seniors, perhaps at the end of the year even if it’s in November or December.”
Quizzed on Regional events, Bess, who is the legal advisor for the Caribbean and Central America (CAC) Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships, said this year’s CAC event was still tentative for August 27-30 in Colombia.
