With the Covid-19 pandemic halting cricket nationwide, physiotherapist attached to the Guyana Jaguars franchise, Neil Barry Jr., has laid out a few tips for the athletes to follow.

Speaking to this publication, Barry made it clear that everyone should treat the threat of the virus seriously by observing the guidelines set out by the World Health Organisation.

“The challenge with this illness is not so much the treatment of the virus but the rapid rate in which it is spreading, especially by those who do not show symptoms right away,” he said.

The physiotherapist urged everyone to take care of their aerobic system by training in that area at least once a week with long runs being one of exercises recommended. He posited that the flu-like sick can be resisted by strong immune systems, naturally correlated to fit persons.

“Running four to five miles a few days a week can have several benefits beyond giving you a sound aerobic base such as helping to keep a strong immune system and building focus, self-discipline and other key traits to athletic success,” Barry stated.

Barry strongly warned of using public facilities where large gatherings are common but recommended self-training plans to avoid contamination.

“Keeping public gatherings to a minimum are proven ways to slow the spread of viruses such as these. This does not have to spell the end of your strength training. There are hundreds of exercises out there many of which can be found on YouTube to safely build strength using just your bodyweight or minimal equipment. Now would be a good time to bring out your resistance bands and other portable exercise tools, but also setting simple targets like getting in 100 push-ups and 500 abdominals per day are still highly beneficial,” he added.

However, if it is unavoidable Barry suggested that the observance of the three feet rule be adhered to while keeping the gathering to at most, five persons. He also noted that it is essential to sanitize the area before and after use.

The former Guyana Under-15 player indicated that this time can also be used to put in “classroom work,” where players can review footage of matches and drills.
