“NBA Basketball gets pulled and the players still get paid but boxers, we have to fight to get paid, so I have to continue doing my work so when they say it’s go time, I have to be ready”
Words mentioned by Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen after he got word that his WBA super middleweight world title bout versus David Morrell Jr., was postponed due to the pandemic COVID-19.
The Brooklyn, New York based Guyanese was scheduled to meet the Cuban/American on April 11 at the Minneapolis Armory.
Morrell, who is undefeated in two fights, turned pro last August with a win over Yendris Rodriguez Valdez at the Armory. He recently signed a long-term contract with Warriors Boxing of South Florida and Russia-based Ural Promotions.
Allen, 35 told Stabroek Sport on Tuesday that despite the uncertainty of the new ring date with Morrell, he will be training at a private facility in an effort to stay sharp and in shape.
Allen, the WBA gold belt holder added that the pandemic “is crucial to everybody” and although he is disappointed with a reschedule “this is not something I can control.”
The undefeated prize fighter (22 (14KO)-0-1) said the event with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) would have been his first fight with the company and would have technically been his “biggest payday to date in boxing” nevertheless he said he is optimistic of getting an official ring date.
“I will give it a month for things to calm down and by then we should be getting some updates, now it’s just about keeping fit.”
Stabroek Sport will keep readers updated as events unfold.
