Mason charged with murder of Rosignol businessman

A West Bank Demerara mason was on Friday charged with the murder of Rosignol businessman, Tony Bishnauth.

Sheldon Smith, 21, a mason of Lot 336 Onderneeming, West Bank Demerara, appeared at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with murder committed on Bishnauth, 78, at Stelling Road, Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice (WBB).

Smith, who appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh, was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison.

He will return to court on April, 21.

Meanwhile, police are the still on the hunt for Medellin Orlando Evans called “Mello”, 32 and Carlos Evans also known as “Beast”, 28, in relation to the crime which occurred on March 13.

Carlos’s last known address is Lot 12 Section ‘C’ D’ Edward Village, WBB while Medellin’s is Lot 61 Railway Line Rosignol, WBB.

Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the above named suspects, is asked to contact the police on 232-0291, 232-0313, 330-2222, 226-3650, 226-1326, 911 or the nearest police station.

The incident occurred around 11pm when  Bishnauth, also known as ‘Uncle Tony’ and ‘England Man’, 78, of Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice, who operated ‘Sandra’s Snac-kette’ at the Rosignol Stelling Road, was shot once in the region of his right ear. He was rushed to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

An autopsy confirmed that Bishnauth died as a result of a single gunshot injury to his head.

Two of Bishnauth’s relatives were also injured during the attack.

The investigation is being spearheaded by ranks of the Guyana Police Force’s Major Crimes Unit.
