Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) coach Imran Jan says that there is still a lot that a cricketer can do to improve his game during this COVID-19 lockdown.
The former national cricketer who is a highly touted coach said cricketers should use this period to work on improving their fitness levels, as well as working mentally on their game.
“Whilst it may be difficult to run on the road or even in parks at this point in time, what we should strive to do is use our resources at home to keep fit. I recommend skipping which a lot of us take for granted. Skipping, in my opinion, is big and we can do that in limited spaces. Players can also use their body weight for training. There are also many exercises they can do to improve their core strength at this time. Resistance bands can also be used to work out.
“Our domestic cricket season was in full swing before this problem came about so as a cricketer you would know where your game is at and you can now have a sit-down and think about your game, where you would like it to go and how quickly. There are also good books out there that athletes can read that would help them mentally prepare for their sport. Mental preparation is huge in today’s sport and a lot of cricketers fail to reach their potential because of a lack of mental strength. This is a time when work can be done on this aspect of your game.
“So, all in all, there is a lot that can be done by the cricketer so when the cricket resumes who remain in good condition or in even better readiness to play the game.”
Jan and his QPCC team, as well as the other cricket clubs in the country, have had to put down their bats due to the coronavirus pandemic and they will be eagerly awaiting an announcement from the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB), as to when the cricket will resume.
TTCB is expected to revisit the situation in three weeks before making a decision on the future of the local league, which has two rounds to go in the Premiership. (Trinidad Guardian)
