A Bushlot Village, West Coast Berbice business as of last evening remained under water after a drain was blocked with red sand and other items from the construction of a butcher shop nearby.
Andrea Arjoon, 32, who operates an ice cream shop and beer garden at Lot 16 Bushlot Village, West Coast Berbice, explained, that she was forced to contact the media after the neighbourhood democratic council failed to assist her.
She said after the rain started to fall the water began to rise on Saturday afternoon since there was no clear passage via the drain for it to recede. According to the woman, they began seeking help from the authorities but their efforts proved futile.
A devastated Arjoon said the water quickly began to flood the entire lower flat of her house damaging some freezers, chair sets, appliances, a dresser with her children’s clothing and other items.
As of last evening she estimated her losses to be over $1M.
The woman also noted that her bedridden mother, 67, is badly affected by the flood. “We presently under water but we trying to pump the water out from the house”, the frustrated woman said last evening.
She noted that they also attempted to clear the drain themselves but were met with opposition by the owners of the butcher shop.
“They building on the reserve there and now they block up the drain and nobody doing anything and we left in the flood”, she lamented.
The woman pointed out that they have operated at that location for over thirty years and have never seen such a flood. She is pleading for assistance with clearing the drain in the hope of the water receding at the earliest.
