Two men accused of breaking and entering a woman’s house and stealing a quantity of jewellery amounting to $154,000, have been placed on remand.
Joel Johnson, 27, of Lot 179 Old Road Eccles, East Bank Demerara, and Quincy Wilson, 22, were brought before Magistrate Dylon Bess in his Georgetown courtroom, when they both pleaded not guilty to a burglary charge.
The charge states that between March 23rd and March 24th, at First Street McDoom, East Bank Demerara, they broke and entered the dwelling house of Lisa Ahmad and stole two designer watches, valued $42,000 in total, a quantity of gold and diamond jewellery, valued $102,000 and a quantity of artificial jewellery, valued $10,000, all property of Lisa Ahmad.
Following a not guilty plea given by both men, Police Prose-cutor Sanj Singh told Magistrate Bess that Johnson is currently facing an attempted murder charge before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly and that after being placed on bail for the charge, a warrant is out for his arrest due to his absence to the court. The prosecutor further stated that based on Johnson’s failure to present himself to the court, he would be objecting to the man’s bail. He also objected to Wilson being released on bail, highlighting to the court that the men are facing a joint charge.
However, Wilson pleaded with the Magistrate to be released on bail. The mechanic told the court that he was wrongfully accused of the offence and that due to some financial restraints he would not be able to afford bail if granted, so he was asking for self-bail.
After explaining to Wilson and Johnson that based on the prosecutor’s case he would be remanding them to prison, he adjourned the matter until May 29th when both men will be brought before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly.
