Former national Under-19 opener, Alex Algoo, is hopeful he can break into the Cricket Guy Inc., Academy and move his career further.

The Young Warriors Cricket Club right-hander has built a reputation of being one of the hardest hitting top order batsmen around and one for the future.

Algoo said, “I would be so happy to get an academy contract…It would mean so much because that was one of my goals coming out of the Under-19 regional tournament last year…”

The 19-year-old said that should he be given the opportunity to join the academy, it will be beneficial to his development and bring him closer to the realization of representing his country and West Indies at the senior level.

“Joining the academy would help me gain more experience on the game with the established senior players and coaches around who, I have no doubt, will help me to understand the game more and to help me better my skills,” he said.

The West Canefield Settlement, East Canje resident, indicated that he has been using all opportunities to play as an audition to showcase his talent.

The stickily-built batsman caught the eyes of many when he hammered seven sixes and 10 fours on his way to 175 in five hours at Everest Cricket Club against the Select Under-17 in last year’s Guyana Cricket Board Inter-County tournament.

In the Guyana Jaguars 50-over Franchise League, Algoo finished as the leading run-getter for Upper Corentyne with 252 runs, the equivalent of 26 percent of his team’s runs. He scored four half-centuries and finished seventh overall in terms of runs aggregate.

Algoo returned to represent his club but due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, he has only been able to play one two-day match where he scored 56 and 42 not out.

He told this publication that since his stint with the national youth side, he has been working hard on his fitness and continuously training while pledging to give 150 percent one and off the field.

“I’m working hard on my fitness and to be a better person in this sport…I continue to give it 150 percent on and off the field and I am eager to grab the opportunity once it presents itself to show what I am capable of,” Algoo said.

He was cognizant of his weak areas and indicated that he has been working diligently on being more patient, safer and improving on his concentration.

“Since I came back from the Regional Under-19, I’ve been working hard with some of my coaches, teammates and even my little brother [Sanjay, who is in the Guyana under-15) to improve my game and I’m improving day by day, I’m trying to concentrate more on my batting which means I’m trying to be a bit more patient and playing safer,” he stated.

Algoo acknowledged that he knows that being part of the set up brings him closer to his dream, a dream of one day “playing for Guyana senior team and West Indies.

“Growing up as a youngster, I’ve always watched cricket on television and hope to be there someday.”
