A pedal cyclist of Queenstown, George-town died yesterday afternoon after he was struck down by a minibus on the Houston Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
The dead man has been identified as Rudy Nurse, 32, of Lot 188, Lance Gibbs Street, Queenstown, Georgetown.
Police in a statement last night said Nurse was struck down by a minibus driven by a twenty-five-year- old of Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
Information provided by the police related that the cyclist was riding up the road which caters for traffic flowing into Georgetown.
“The pedal cyclist was proceeding south (north bound traffic only) on the extreme western side of Houston Public Road while the bus was proceeding north on the eastern drive lane of the said road; as the driver of the bus was in the vicinity of Rahaman’s Park, the pedal cyclist reportedly proceeded to cross from the western side of the road to eastern side and in the process of doing so he ended up into the path of the vehicle where the front left side came into contact with the pedal cyclist,” police said.
As a result of the impact, the cyclist fell onto the road surface and sustained injuries about his body.
He was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the minibus, which carries registration number BYY 1311, has been placed in police custody and is assisting with investigations. A breathalyzer test administered to the driver returned negative.
