The second annual Tyrone Alphonso Johnson Memorial T10 competition scheduled for Saturday at the Parika-Salem ground has been postponed owing to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic.
This is according to one of the organisors, Tamika Johnson who stated, “Due to the Covid-19 pandemic an important part of the sponsorship team, Telston Johnson, his mother and siblings, who are living in New York are unable to come to Guyana for the Easter holidays and that is the time the tournament was scheduled to be played.”
The organiser also posited that the curfew and barring of social events have made it impractical to have the tournament bowl off.
“Government has also placed a hold on all social activities so no one can get permission for any social function and also we are in keeping with the Ministry of Public Health guidelines for social distancing to help fight the pandemic,” she said.
No revised date has been set as yet but the organisers are looking between August and September should normalcy return.
Last year, six teams took part in a T20 format for $200,000 with Parika beating Hyde Park by seven wickets to emerge champions.
The second edition will see eight teams battling for $500,000 in cash and prizes.
The event has been organised in memory of former Parika Salem and GDF pacer Johnson who died in a speedboat accident in the Essequibo River in June 1994 at age 33.
