Guyana’s fittest man, Dillon Mahadeo, still has his hard hat on in preparation for the Reebok CrossFit Games even as there is some speculation that the event may not take place because of the coronavirus pandemic. Always an optimist, Mahadeo, however, is going forward and functioning with the mentality that the prestigious event, which attracts the world’s fittest athletes, will go ahead as planned in August in Madison, Wisconsin, USA.

Said Mahadeo during an telephone interview, “To date, there hasn’t been any word from CrossFit regarding the postponing or cancelling of the 2020 Reebok CrossFit Games.”

Unlike most sportsmen and women who do not have access to gyms across the 592, Mahadeo has been blessed to have the uses of a private training facility, out of harm’s way.

“As it pertains to my training, my gym facilities and resources are solely accessible to myself and Delice (Adonis) in our preparation for the Games. Nothing has been altered or changed in my programming or training regime. Training is still in effect as if I am scheduled to compete in August while adhering to the necessary precautions and guidelines such as sanitizing equipment and paying attention to personal protection.”

The five-time local CrossFit champ, who made his debut at the games last year, is encouraging Guyanese to adhere to the health guidelines set by the Ministry of Public Health.

“During this pandemic, I urge everyone to remain sanguine. Let’s all play our part individually to protect ourselves and loved ones from the deadly COVID-19 virus. Follow the safety guidelines from WHO; practice

social distancing, wash hands regularly, sanitize, eat healthy nutritional food and keep your immune system healthy,” he declared.

“We can try to use this time to be productive in some way of the other by working on the things we previously haven’t had the time to service,” Mahadeo, a former national junior table tennis player added. Mahadeo also urged Guyanese to remain active in a safe environment and consume healthy meals.

“I’d encourage everyone to keep their immune system and respiratory system healthy by consuming foods high in nutritional value and incorporating a little exercise routine everyday at home while under self-isolation. A quick YouTube “home workout” search would be beneficial. “It doesn’t have to be anything intense or strenuous, it doesn’t even need to consist of any equipment, just bodyweight movements and exercises .

Just to keep active and stay healthy,” Mahadeo concluded.
