A Courtland, Corentyne, man was yesterday arrested after he assaulted his girlfriend and her eight-year-old daughter.
The man, Junior Benn, 32, a linesman at the Guyana Power and Light Company, accused the woman, who is 32, of having an affair. The reason? She had her phone on vibrate.
However, after the woman denied the allegations, Benn allegedly began to hit her to her face repeatedly. He then threw her to the ground and continued assaulting her, after which he opened a bottle containing a suspected poisonous substance and threw it in her mouth and on her face.
Stabroek News was told that the woman’s eight-year-old daughter then held on to Benn and pleaded with him to stop assaulting her mother.
However, the enraged man then turned his attention to the child and dealt her a punch to her face, causing her to become unconscious.
Neighbours then rushed to their aid and they were both taken to the Port Mourant Hospital.
The woman has since been admitted to the hospital, while her daughter, who sustained injuries to her right eye and nose, was yesterday afternoon transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
Commander of Region Six Calvin Brutus yesterday confirmed that Benn was in custody.
He noted that the man had alleged that the woman gave him a poisonous substance.
However, the commander stated that the man was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital, where that allegation was disproved.
