Dear Editor,
Democracy in Guyana is currently under threat. There is however hope that the pressures brought about by democratic forces locally and internationally could save the day and allow for a duly-elected and democratic government to be installed without delay.
I have witnessed several elections in the past but I cannot recall any such vociferous and sustained condemnation from the international community most notably the United States over what is a clear and blatant attempt to thwart the democratic will of the Guyanese people. This bodes well for the future of democracy in Guyana.
Now that the Courts have cleared the way for a recount, the ball is once again in GECOM’s court. Will it deliver on its constitutional mandate to conduct a transparent and credible recount of the votes? Guyana, indeed the world is watching on.
Yours faithfully,
Hydar Ally
