Biker dies after crashing into utility post in Bartica

A 20-year-old motorcyclist yesterday died after he collided with a lamp post while riding in Bartica.

The cyclist was identified as 20-year-old Raphael Haly of Robb Street, Georgetown.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday around 6.35 pm at Second Avenue, Bartica. Initial investigations revealed that Haly was at the time riding a motorcycle bearing registration CK 2316 and was proceeding north on Second Avenue Bartica, reportedly at a fast rate of speed. It was reported that upon approaching a speed bump he lost control of the motorcycle and collided with a lamp pole located on the western side of Second Avenue and Second Street, Bartica.

The cyclist who was reportedly a member of the “592 Bike Life” movement was taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital in an unconscious state where he was admitted and treated for severe head injuries. He was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he succumbed to the injuries he suffered at about 2 pm yesterday.

Haly’s body is currently at the GPH’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
