A young resident of `A’ Field Sophia is currently in hospital nursing a cutlass wound and his mother is calling on the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to act quickly to prevent his attackers from doing further harm to him.
Esther Perreira, a farmer and newspaper vendor, told Stabroek News that her son Winston Marks was attacked by a gang of men just after 7:30 on Tuesday morning while working with her at their farm located on a dam at `A’ Field.
She explained that the men, who were part of a group which was clearing the trench bordering the dam, had been discarding the waste from the trench on her crops when she objected.
“I said man you can’t throw the stuff on the plants. Just careful you can’t damage the crop and he start cussing me,” she said.
According to Perreira, she was about 80 feet away when one of the workers deliberately stepped on a plant and her son confronted him.
“He stamp on the plant and my son say how you gon do that? You ain’t see this is a big woman working hard? You can’t do that and he chuck the boy,” she noted.
She further explained that after he was pushed her son delivered “a straight right” to his attacker who then threatened him with a cutlass.
At this point the other workers became involved in the altercation and chased Marks through the community. Perreira noted that several members of the community including members of the community policing group tried to stop the attack but failed and her son was chopped about his hand.
He was able to escape by jumping a fence and went to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for treatment including surgery. A report was made at the GPF outpost located at the hospital and that report was forwarded to the Turkeyen Police Station.
Divisional Commander Phillip Azore confirmed to this newspaper that a report of the incident had been filed and indicated that officers are actively making queries.
Perreira is desperately hoping that these enquiries lead to arrests as according to her several members of the group have told her that “they ain’t finish” with her son.
