Chairman of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Competition’s Committee Shaun Massiah says they do not intend to prematurely cancel and announce winners of a number of tournaments which have been stalled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If a decision is made to cancel the tournaments, then the winners would be announced based on point standings, similar to what Cricket West Indies (CWI) did earlier this year to end the regional four-day tournament with two rounds to go.
“Even at our last Zoom meeting, we didn’t discuss aborting any of the tournaments,” Massiah affirmed.
He noted that all tournaments will resume as per normal once the COVID-19 pandemic is under control to give sponsors their due mileage.
“We struggle to get sponsorship so if we abort those tournaments and announce winners, it might be difficult to get new sponsorship after this COVID – 19 to get cricket playing… so we are going to run with those tournaments until they are completed,” the committee head noted.
Cricket in the Capital City, like many other parts of Guyana, continues to be a backyard past time since the outbreak of the new Coronavirus.
There has been a prolonged absence of the sport in 2020 due to several factors starting with Guyana’s Mashramani celebrations along with the holding of General and Regional Elections.
The outbreak of the new Coronavirus has since contributed to the hiatus, as the Georgetown Cricket Association (GAC) recently announced that it will be following the Ministry of Public Health’s recommendation to promote social distancing as a means to halt the spread of the virus.
The move has stalled cricket action in the New Building Society (NBS) 40 overs, second-division tournament, the Noble House Seafoods, second-division, two-day tournament and GISE, Star Party Rental and Trophy Stall first-division.
