Police have asked the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice on charges against the suspects in the murder of Mahaica fisherman Zahir Ali, who was fatally stabbed on.
Assistant Police Commissioner and Regional Commander of Region 4 (c) Royston Andries-Junor also confirmed yesterday that that the two suspects are still in police custody.
Ali, of Lot 78 Mosquito Hall, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, was on Wednesday evening knifed to death after an argument with neighours who threw bricks at his home.
Ali sustained what appeared to be stab wounds to the left side of his chest and another to his abdomen.
According to a Guyana Police Force statement, around 7:20pm on Wednesday, the two suspects stoned Ali’s house, resulting in an argument between the men. The suspects allegedly then pulled Ali into their yard, dealt him several blows and stabbed him about his body.
Radika Ali, the niece of the deceased, told this newspaper that her uncle was at a funeral having some drinks, and thereafter returned home peacefully. (This newspaper incorrectly reported that Ali was at a wedding reception.) After his return home, however, the suspects decided to “pelt bricks” at his house. “After he come outside, them pull he and beat he and by the time I reach, I saw him lying in a pool of blood and he was panting for breath,” she explained.
Zahir Ali is survived by his wife and four children.
