Orealla’s Toshao Carl Peneux has said permission has been granted for the community to make weekly trips to Corriverton for supplies.
The Toshao previously highlighted the village’s potential food shortage as a result of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) travel restrictions instituted by Suriname’s authorities that prevent access to the Corentyne River.
He had highlighted the issue to the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) last Saturday.
In a follow-up interview with Stabroek News, Peneux explain-ed that the situation is being addressed as two boats were given permission by Suriname’s authorities to travel once a week to Corriverton. This, he said, will be done every Monday. Due to the daily 6 pm curfew, the vessels will return on Tuesdays to the community.
He added that the boats are scheduled to return with groceries for those villagers who indicated the need to have goods purchased.
Peneux, who also voiced concerns in his report about public servants who were still to receive salaries, informed Stabroek News that 22 workers attached to Community Infrastructure Improvement Programme (CIIP) will be able to access their salaries as of tomorrow, while pensioners will be able to access their payments during the course of this week.
In his statement to the CDC, he had also warned of a fuel shortage, which would result in a blackout. He said a temporary fix was put in place to enable access to sufficient fuel for use for the time being.
