Barbadians stuck in Guyana due to COVID-19 travel restrictions currently have to wait until clearance is given for flights to resume, according to Consulate of Barbados Gerry Gouveia.
In a telephone interview with Sunday Stabroek, Gouveia said that while there are Barbadians who want to be repatriated, they will have to wait until LIAT can fly again return home.
Tyrone Applewhaite of Christ Church, Barbados, told this newspaper yesterday that he has been making attempts to leave the country since March 18 to return home.
He said he has reached out to Barbadian radio stations in attempts to get Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s attention in order for plans to be made for the return of Barbadians stuck in Guyana. However, he noted that the responses he has received thus far are not comforting.
He mentioned that he has noticed other countries have been chartering flights to have their citizens safely return home but nothing is being done to help Barbadians in Guyana in this regard.
However, Gouveia said that there was nothing that could done regarding flights to return Barbadians with LIAT, like other airlines, not being allowed to operate.
Applewhaite, however, has asked that Barbadians who are trying to return home contact him on telephone number 676-6521. He hopes that with more persons, a decision to have them return home, will be made.
